Iza took in the scene in front of her as she struggled against the tight handgrip the men had on her arms. There were more than a dozen people gathered around the walls of the room and still more streaming in with the commotion. The place smelled like a mine, probably from rock tracked in from the miners milling around.

At a table in the back of the room, Jovani was seated across from a blonde woman.

That figures. Here Iza was doing her bomaxed best to save Jovani, but he was having tea with the enemy.

The two men holding Iza let her go at a nod from the petite blonde woman at the table. So this is Yeaga. She doesn’t look too tough to me. From behind, with her long ponytail and small waist, she could be mistaken for a fourteen-year-old. But everyone in the room seemed to obey her every command. She was the one running the show, so Iza kept her eyes on her, ignoring Jovani’s shocked expression.

“Sorry I’m interrupting your tea-time,” Iza said, scowling down at Yeaga.

To her surprise, Yeaga smiled. Her face transformed, the hard edges of softening, and her raspy laugh was probably the most provocative thing Iza had ever heard.

Yeaga stood while her men kept Jovani in his seat by placing a hand on each of his shoulders. “No problem, we were just finishing up. Jovani, here, was just promising to help me, and it seems that offer would extend to you, since it’s your ship we’ll be needing.”

How dare he offer up my ship to help these people start a rebellion against the corporations! Whatever Jovani had agreed to was of no concern to her, and she’d make that clear soon enough. Iza’s eyes narrowed. “And you are?”

“You know who I am. My people saw you talking with old lady Brandis. But I haven’t gotten your name yet.”

“Captain Sundari.”

“Well, Captain, as you can see, we’re having trouble with the local Enforcers. We were hoping for TSS intervention, but it seems we haven’t made enough of a show yet to get their attention.”

Iza shrugged one shoulder. “I’m sorry, am I supposed to care about what you’re doing here? Just because you have an excuse for kidnapping someone doesn’t make it okay.”

Yeaga paced behind the table, unconcerned about Iza’s lack of sympathy. “Jovani says you arrived on an H3X that needs repairs. We might be able to help you with that. I assume you were also trying to rescue him when we captured you?” Yeaga said. “Being friends with us could be to your benefit.”

So smug, it’s going to be a pleasure to see that expression change in about two minutes. Iza stood her ground. “That’s not entirely true. I allowed your men to capture me.”

Yeaga raised an eyebrow and picked up her cup, finishing its contents before nodding. “Well, if that’s so, then you’re in the middle of a rescue and I’m delaying your progress. Please, continue,” she said with a wave of one hand.
